Kindergarten
Comorin International School offers a warm, secure and caring environment to help our children enjoy and benefit from all they do at school. Here at Comorin, Educational experiences provide balance and variety among physical, mental, spiritual, and social activities as the child's world of awareness is extended from the home to the classroom.
Our Kindergarten Curriculum meets the needs of our very youngest children and is designed for children from 3 - 5 years of age. This curriculum underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing the whole of their learning.
The six areas of learning include: Language Development; Mathematical Development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; Creative Development; and General awareness.
Grade 1 and 2.
The curriculum of the Primary uses traditional teacher-directed study/learning activities in language arts, science, social studies, Tamil, math, physical education, art, and music. The curriculum seeks to provide a continuum in each core content area as the basis for the development of perceiving, thinking, and problem-solving skills. The child moves from concrete experiences to increasingly more complex levels of abstraction in critical thinking. Skills related to each area are built upon previous learning and measurable
Performance objectives.
Since students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, an effort is made to identify the instructional level of each student in relation to the subject continuum, including recommending and/or requiring alternative instruction, if necessary, which will assist the pupil to achieve at an optimum level.More emphasis is given for complete communication.
As there are no formal exams, continuous evaluation is done by means of Activity Sheets to reinforce the work done in class, By Presentation of their thoughts and ideas ,By using Role plays ,By Speech and Drama classes where children express creatively with confidence.
Some of the Unique features of our curriculum are Yoga, Art & Craft, Music & Dance, chess, Taekwondo, Film club, Math lab, Reading programme and the Class Library concept.
The primary 1 & 2 curriculum equips learners to confidently face this challenging World - to think, to dream, and to be prepared for the years ahead.
Academic Innovations
CIS has come up with a number of academic innovations to be implemented.
NIIT e-Guru Math Lab
NIIT e- Guru Math Lab offers Multiple Teaching and Learning Aids comprising of Technology Applications, Videos, Manipulative’s, Measuring Instruments, Tables and Charts, to schools. Based on the three pillars of ‘Imagination, Investigation and Interaction’, it provides an opportunity to students to understand, internalize, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations, thus building interest and confidence in students learning the subject. The laboratory also allows and encourages the students to think, discuss amongst themselves as well as with the teacher, and assimilate concepts.
In addition to providing greater scope for individual participation in the process of learning and becoming autonomous learners, the Math Lab also enables the teacher to demonstrate, explain and reinforce abstract mathematical ideas by using concrete objects, models, charts, graphs, pictures, posters, etc.
Speech and Drama
In Speech and Drama, we teach children skills through the exciting medium of drama, through a love of poetry, the use of imagination, an enjoyment of rhythm and sound, story-making, idea sharing, problem solving and group dynamics.
This actually helps in Increased self-esteem , Increased enjoyment of learning, A growing command of language , Desire to share and present ideas , Confidence to perform , Desire to read , Clearer speech , Improved pronunciation , Improved tone of voice.
Chess and Scrabble
Chess and scrabble is compulsory at CIS as it would benefit students in increased reading comprehension, better problem solving skills, and even higher scores on standardized math and aptitude tests.
Class Library
This is one way to bring the library to the classroom. A few comic books, story books and children's magazines are put up on a rack in the classroom. Every child has to read all the books, and then the books are changed. The children cannot take the books home, but have to read them in the breaks or in their free periods. This improves their reading and language skills.
CIS Film appreciation
Learning does not happen only through books. Many well-made movies have a lot to teach us, if we pay attention. Carefully selected movies are screened every week for Grade I and II and once a quarter for Grades III onwards. The in-charge teachers watch the movie beforehand and during the screening, they pause to explain the broad theme and point out interesting facts.
After watching the movie, the children write a composition on what they learnt from the movie. Please note that the composition should not describe the story line, but focus on what the children have learnt. This makes learning fun and interesting, and children often get inspired by the movie characters.
The Papyrus Club's Program
The Papyrus Club’s program is a pioneering initiative from Deccan Chronicle and Net link technologies to enable schools to create and publish their own online newspapers.
We at CIS have started our online newspaper Comorin Glasnost . It gives an opportunity for our students to regularly take on the roles of reporters, photographers, editors etc, and this is well supported by the co-ordinator to bring out the monthly online newspaper.
